ORIGIN

Art is an expression of life. Talavera is a beloved art form that originated in the small Pueblas of rural Mexico. It all started in the 16th century. Talavera is a blend of indigenous and European artistry that is built upon the Spanish tradition. This style of pottery falls within a larger category of ceramics known as Majolica. This refers to any earthenware that involves handmade ceramics, pottery, and art.

Mexican Talavera builds upon layers of cultures for an artisan tradition that is truly unique and Mexican. From the Aztecs to the Mayans, the tribal people of Mexico each had their part in shaping what would later become Mexican Talavera.

After the city of Puebla was founded, Spanish monks from the region of Talavera de la Reina began to share their special techniques with local natives to enhance their skills in pottery and ceramics. The introduction of the potter’s wheel as well as tin-glazing helped to blend longstanding indigenous and European craftsmanship. New colors and patterns were added to make Mexican Talavera stand out. A new tradition was born, and we are proud to carry on that tradition today.
